The short answer: to board, play or be groomed at Royal Treatment in Baton Rouge, your dog needs current proof of rabies, DHPP, Bordetella and Lepto. Canine flu is recommended but not required. Vaccinations must be given at least 24 hours before your appointment.
Vaccines required for boarding and daycare
Every dog who visits us needs to be up to date on the following, and all vaccinations must have been given at least 24 hours before any appointment:
- Rabies
- DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus)
- Bordetella (kennel cough). An annual shot is accepted.
- Lepto (leptospirosis), unless it is already included in your dog’s DHPP
Some DHPP vaccines combine with Lepto, depending on your vet. We need all of these covered, so if your dog’s vaccine combines them, you are all set. If you aren’t sure, your vet’s record will show it.
What about canine flu?
Canine influenza vaccination is recommended but not required. It is worth asking your vet about, especially if your dog spends time around other dogs.
Why we require vaccines
Dogs share space, toys and air when they board or play in a group. Requiring current vaccines helps protect every guest. No vaccine offers a guarantee, and Bordetella in particular has many strains, but being up to date lowers the risk for your dog and for everyone else’s.
Puppies
We welcome puppies as young as 6 months old, as long as they have had all of their puppy shots. They do not need to wait until they have every vaccine on the adult list. Call us at 225.663.8223 if you have questions about where your puppy stands.
How to send your dog’s records
- Ask your vet’s office to send your dog’s vaccine records. Most clinics can email them.
- Do this a few days before your visit, not the morning of, especially around busy times like holidays.
- Check the dates. Make sure nothing expires before your dog’s stay ends.
- Remember the 24-hour rule. A vaccine given the day of your visit, or less than 24 hours before it, won’t count.
